Federal Government issued an advertisement for the post of HEC Chairman, which shows that the Federal Government decided to remove the HEC Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri, and looking for the appointment of a new HEC Chairman.

The advertisement is published by the Federal Ministry of Education in line with the new Amendment Act, under which the term of office of the new chairman is fixed at two years. A committee has been established in this regard to select the new HEC chairman under the chairmanship of the Federal Minister for Education Rana Tanveer. The committee includes some current Vice-Chancellors of the famous public Universities which include VC Allama Iqbal Open University, Dr. Zia-ul-Qayyum, and VC Fatima Jinnah University Rawalpindi Dr. Saima Hamid, and VC Balochistan University of Technology Dr. Farooq Baazi.

Earlier the HEC Chairman Dr. Tariq Banuri was removed from his post under the same Act last year March 2021. HE went to the Islamabad High court ( IHC) and was restored by IHC ten months later in January 2022.

Interesting thing is that this advertisement for the HEC Chairman has given only four days to submit the applications for the HEC chairman post with complete documents which include the NOC from the existing Institution. The last date to submit the applications is 26th May 2022. According to many, it is unrealistic because in most cases several days are required to get the NOC from the department. But Federal Government has given only four days to submit the applications.

Now it will be decided by the Committee in the coming days who will be the new HEC Chairman.

Doctor Tariq Banuri is a Pakistani academic, development economist, environmentalist, climate scientist, educationalist, human rights advocate, and author who holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and who is the fourth and current Chairperson of the Higher Education Commission.
