Govt Announces to Established Committee To Cut Salaries and Pension Expenditures

The government announced the establishment of a fresh team to reduce spending, like salaries and pensions. This new committee, led by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has seven members.

Government officials like Vice Chairman Planning Commission Dr. Jahanzeb, Cabinet Division, Treasury, and Industry Secretaries will be part of it. Alongside them, there are independent members like Dr. Qaiser Bengali, Dr. Farrukh Saleem, and Naveed Iftikhar. But, they won’t be touching the defense budget and interest expenses, which make up most of the federal budget.

The committee will focus on just a 16 percent spending review, trying to make sense of expenses on pensions and development.

But it’s not expected to save a lot. Dr. Qaiser Bengali, one of the committee members, has been speaking out for a while, saying we should cut non-military spending from the defense budget and shut down unneeded cantonments.

Sources say the prime minister has given the committee a week to come up with ideas for reducing government spending. Revising the pension plan is a big deal in discussions with the IMF, which start on March 14.
