Senate Committee Addresses PIA to Settle Employees Protest and Grievance Issues
In the latest updates, the Senate Committee considered the ongoing protest of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) employees against privatization and non-increase in wages and ordered the flag carrier to resolve all grievances through negotiations.
On Tuesday, the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Aviation was held at the Parliament House under the chairmanship of Senator Hidayatullah.
Employee Grievances and PIA Protest
In the ongoing situation, PIA employees are continuing their protest to increase salaries and pension enhancements, as well as to avoid from privatization of the national flag carrier PIA.
Senator Mian Raza Rabbani asserted that the employees have the right to join any kind of movement for their fundamental rights and demanded that the FIR registered against the PIA employees be withdrawn. PIA CEO Aamir Hayat said that PIA is ready to talk to the employees, but violation of the law will not be tolerated. The committee directed the PIA to resolve the grievances of the employees through negotiations.

The committee took note of Haseeb’s public submission regarding the non-enhancement of pension under CAA. The petitioner pointed out that the pension of the employees who retired after 2014 was not increased for many years.
As per CAA Employees Pay and Pension Regulations (2014) pension of employees who retired on or before 2014 will be revised every three years, however, this has not been implemented. The committee decided to form a sub-committee to investigate the matter further and named Senator Salim Mandviwala as its convener.
Senator Saifullah Abro highlighted the issue of delay in baggage handling at Islamabad Airport. CAA officials informed that 40-45 minutes are required for baggage clearance as per international standards, however, the delay was mainly due to pre-customs scanning, heavy luggage load, and congestion at the airport.

It was further said that the Civil Aviation Authority is closely monitoring the Ground Handling Agents (GHAs) and taking punitive action against the GHAs to prevent delays. The committee directed the CAA to provide details of GHA along with its staff details as well as problems faced in handling goods in the next meeting.
